Under garments
Undergarments underwear, are the base of historical and fantasy clothes. Historical clothing of this type was worn universally, the only difference was the quality of cut and cloth, which depended on the status of the wearer. They were rather comfortable and practical, because they served mainly as house wear and workwear.
An example of men’s historical clothing consists of a separate hose (or a joined hose in the later period), a doublet. In case of women, a simple cote and short women’s hose.

The role of medieval undergarments in historical clothing
In historical clothing and fantasy clothing, medieval undergarments work as the middle layer of a costume. Usually they were worn on the layer of linen underwear and under the layer of outer historical clothing.
However, undergarments could also function as a final layer of a costume - medieval or even in a form of fantasy clothes of historical origin. Doublet, pourpoint or cotte can perfectly function as casual clothing for everyday routine or even for work.
For special occasions or for a journey, a costume can be easily completed with another layer of historical clothing in the form of cloak (also for ladies), surcoat (also for ladies) or houppelande (also available in women’s version). It will make a full set of outstanding historical clothing based on findings which can easily work as fantasy clothing for LARP events.
